Candidates discuss issues affecting
people
with disabilities
at Civitan forum
Candidates for Ohio House, Ohio Senate, and Lucas County Commissioner
attended a forum to discuss disabilities issues at the Heatherdowns Branch Library. the forum was co-sponsored by
Maumee Valley Civitan, the Arc of Lucas County, and People First of
Toledo. Also attending was Ann Payne (pictured to the left), a representative from the League of Women Voters,
who discussed the new voting rules.

Civitan helps send members of People First
to a Voting Rights rally in at the Statehouse
Members
of People First of Greater Toledo, JoRita Fox and Wanda Huber,
attended a voting rights rally at the Statehouse in Toledo for
people with disabilities. The cost of the transportation was
shared by Maumee Valley Civitan and the Adult Options Department
of the Lucas County Board of DD.
Maumee Valley Civitan Receives
Charter
The International President of Civitan, Ed Baum, was in Sylvania
on June 28, 2006 to officiate at the chartering of the first
Toledo chapter of the international service group. The new
Maumee Valley Civitan will be part of a worldwide network of
clubs devoted to improving the lives of children and adults with
mental retardation and developmental disabilities.
Civitan provides members with opportunities for personal and
profes sional development while improving communities through
public service. “The more than two dozen charter members of this
club represent a cross-section of advocates, parents, service
providers, and professionals in the mr/dd community,” said Lon
Mitchell, Public Information Manager of the Lucas County Board
of MR/DD and one of the charter members. “We are excited to
affiliate with an organization that has done so much in
education and research concerning developmental disabilities.”
The Civitan focus on developmental disabilities began in the
1950’s when Civitan funded some of the first special education
training for school teachers. That commitment continues today
through local and

international efforts such as summer camps,
vocational programs, Special Olympics and cutting-edge research
into Autism, Cerebral Palsy and Alzheimers at the Civitan
International Research Center.
Charter officers for the club are Connie Poole, President; Mary Pat
Riker, President-Elect; Bob DeVoe, Second Vice-President; Kay
Bennett, Treasurer; Lon Mitchell, Secretary; and Eric Henzler,
Sergeant-at-Arms.
